WATERFORD WALLS PHOTOGRAPHED AUGUST 2025

BY MAKER AND LAND

The third and most recent layer of the wall's history began in 2021 when the 2017 mural was replaced by a new work by the Spanish artist duo Maker & Land. The festival, in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes Dublin, invited the duo to participate in the 2021 festival. A street art database corroborates the location at 1 Little Patrick Street and the creation date of 19th August 2021. This provides a definitive timeline for the wall's most recent artistic transformation, a critical point in the wall's chronology.

PARKS AND GARDENS

BOTANIC GARDENS

In terms of age, the National Botanic Gardens in Dublin are senior to many, but not the oldest. Their foundation in 1795 places them amongst the well-established botanic gardens of the world. However, the University of Oxford Botanic Garden, founded in 1621 as a physic garden for medicinal plants, holds the title of the oldest botanic garden in the United Kingdom. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh also predates Dublin's, having been established in 1670, again with a focus on medicinal plants. The world-famous Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, were officially founded in 1759, making them a contemporary of the Dublin gardens.

EXAMPLES OF PUBLIC ART

Public art is a broad and evolving genre of art that is created for and displayed in the public realm. Unlike art found in a museum or gallery, public art is visually and physically accessible to a wide audience and is often, though not always, the result of a public process involving community input and public funding.
