In September 2023, Swords was navigating the "New Normal"—a period where the shadow of the pandemic was fading into the background of seasonal health management. For those on the ground, the challenges were often more physical than viral. Frequent transport disruptions and significant delays became a hallmark of the commute during this time. On one such return journey, a confrontation between groups of schoolboys forced a bus to stop, requiring a backup vehicle that took nearly an hour to arrive.

Since 2023, the town has shifted from merely managing post-pandemic life to active regeneration. The Swords Cultural Quarter near the Castle is now well underway, aiming to transform the heart of the town into a vibrant hub by 2027. While the bus journeys of 2023 were fraught with frustration, the infrastructure is slowly pivoting. The BusConnects and MetroLink projects are now moving beyond the planning phase, promising to eventually alleviate the very congestion that once made travel to Fingal so arduous.

The Canon 5D Mark III and Sigma 24-105mm f/4: A Classic Pairing

Choosing a Canon 5D Mark III in 2023 was a decision rooted in reliability and ergonomics. Despite its age, the body remains a masterpiece of DSLR engineering. When paired with a GPS unit (the GP-E2), it becomes a vital tool for travel photography, allowing for the precise mapping of a trek through Swords Castle or the Ward River Valley Park. The 22.3MP sensor provides a "filmic" quality that many modern mirrorless cameras struggle to replicate.

The Sigma 24-105mm f/4 Art lens is a popular choice over the Canon equivalent due to its superior sharpness and robust build. However, as noted during the 2023 sessions in Swords, this combination can be temperamental. The lens is heavy and can occasionally suffer from "lens creep" or calibration issues on older DSLR bodies. At f/4, it serves as a versatile "walk-around" lens, but it requires precise micro-adjustments in the camera settings to truly excel.

Revitalising RAW Files with DxO PureRAW 6

The decision to use DxO PureRAW 6 to process the original 2023 Swords files was random. Older full-frame sensors, like the one found in the 5D Mark III, can show their age through luminance noise in shadows and a slight lack of "bite" in fine details when compared to 2026 technology.

DxO PureRAW 6 acts as a pre-processor, using DeepPRIME XD (eXtreme Detail) technology to demosaic and denoise the RAW data before it is ever opened in traditional editing suites. For the Swords collection, the software specifically addressed several key areas:

Lens Softness: By using specific DxO Optics Modules for the Sigma 24-105mm, the software corrected distortion and vignetting that the camera’s internal JPEG engine often misses.

Noise Reduction: The software effectively "gains" approximately two stops of light, making an ISO 3200 shot appear as clean as one taken at ISO 800.

Detail Recovery: It cleans the RAW file without the artificial, "crunchy" look associated with standard sharpening tools.

The resulting images, once set aside due to technical disappointments, have been transformed into a crisp, professional record of a town on the brink of change.
