Captured in the tranquil surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin, the works of Peter Slyman have become a celebrated fixture of Ireland’s premier outdoor art event, Sculpture in Context.
Peter Slyman is an Irish sculptor known for creating whimsical, site-specific installations that challenge the viewer's perception of scale and everyday objects. His work often bridges the gap between the natural landscape and human-made utility, inviting a playful dialogue with the environment.
Peter Slyman and Sculpture in Context
Sculpture in Context is the longest-running and largest sculpture exhibition in Ireland. Slyman has a distinguished history with the event, notably becoming a "fan favourite" through the Public Choice Awards.
2018: "Source"
This entry was a significant milestone for Slyman. A large-scale outdoor piece, Source was not only a recipient of a Sculpture in Context Award for outdoor works of distinction but also won the prestigious Most Popular Outdoor Sculpture award, as voted by the public.
2019: "Pinned"
In 2019, Slyman followed up his previous success with Pinned. This sculpture featured a giant, oversized safety pin appearing to "fasten" the landscape together. It became one of the most photographed pieces of the exhibition, praised for its clever simplicity and the way it transformed a mundane household object into a monumental landmark.
The Artist's Vision
Slyman’s association with the Botanic Gardens exhibitions highlights his ability to respond to the "context" of the site. Whether it is "pinning" the earth or exploring the "source" of the gardens' vitality, his art encourages visitors to pause and look at familiar spaces through a surreal, imaginative lens.
