The People’s Republic of Cork Meets the People’s Republic of China If you wander down Roseleigh, you will spot a vibrant piece of street art that beautifully bridges two very different worlds. Part of the brilliant Paint-A-Box initiative, this particular installation playfully leans into a legendary piece of local banter: the long-standing claim that Cork is, in fact, "The Real Capital" and the true "People’s Republic". There is a brilliant duality to this artwork. While this specific piece brings life to a utility box at Roseleigh, eagle-eyed street art spotters might notice variations of the theme elsewhere in the city, including a similar nod to the concept on Washington Street. The Inspiration Behind the Art: "For this piece, we looked at Cork through an oriental lens. Over the last 20 years, lots of citizens of the People's Republic of China have made The People's Republic of Cork their home or have come here to study English, and we welcome them to the real People's Republic wholeheartedly." — ReImagine Cork Cultural Fusion on the Streets of Cork The artwork acts as a visual welcome mat. Over the last two decades, Cork has seen a wonderful influx of Chinese citizens, students, and academics—many of whom come to study at University College Cork (UCC) or learn English in the city's language schools. By blending traditional Chinese aesthetic motifs with the iconic, rebellious spirit of Cork, ReImagine Cork has created more than just a pop of colour on a grey utility box; they have mapped the city’s modern, multicultural identity onto its very streets. It is a warm, witty, and uniquely Corkonian way of saying Fáilte—or 欢迎 (Huānyíng)—to the city's thriving Chinese community.
