Situated on the southern bank of the River Lee, the Brian Quilligan Memorial is a striking piece of public art that serves as a permanent tribute to a young Cork man and a reminder of the river's unpredictable nature.

The Incident

On 9 October 2011, 19-year-old Brian Quilligan, a resident of the Blackpool area in Cork, was fishing on the banks of the River Lee. In a tragic accident, he entered the water and was unable to resurface. His disappearance prompted an extensive two-week search operation involving the Gardaí and the Mallow Search and Rescue team. Brian was eventually recovered on 23 October 2011. The tragedy resonated deeply within the local community and the Traveller community, leading to the commissioning of this memorial at the site of his final moments.

The Sculpture and Artist

The memorial was created by the acclaimed Cork sculptor Mick Wilkins. Known for his ability to capture human emotion and everyday life in physical form, Wilkins crafted a figurative piece that avoids the traditional sombreness of a headstone.

Design: The sculpture depicts a life-sized male figure in a relaxed, contemplative pose. Clad in a hat and sturdy boots, the figure leans back against a large stone, looking out toward the water.

The "Angler" Imagery: Unlike many monuments that use abstract symbolism, this sculpture is a literal representation of Brian's hobby. As the plaque confirms, Brian "died while fishing," and the sculpture immortalises him in that peaceful state of waiting for a catch.

Materials: The figure is rendered with a bronze-like finish, mounted upon two polished granite plinths.

Location

The memorial is located along the popular riverside walkway at the Lee Fields, on the south bank of the River Lee. It is positioned almost directly opposite the Old Cork Waterworks (the Victorian-era pumping station) and the modern Lee Road Water Treatment Plant. Its proximity to the Salmon Weir—a powerful and dangerous stretch of the river—adds a layer of silent warning to the aesthetic beauty of the piece.
