Smithfield is one of Dublin’s most compelling success stories—a historic marketplace that has transitioned from a rugged, livestock-trading past into a sophisticated cultural quarter. At its heart lies Smithfield Plaza (often called Smithfield Square), a massive cobblestoned expanse that serves as a communal living room for the Northside.

The Historic Soul: From Markets to Malts

Smithfield’s identity is rooted in its 17th-century origins as a livestock market. For generations, it was a place of grit and commerce, famous for its monthly horse fairs. Today, that heritage is anchored by the Jameson Distillery Bow St. The distillery, though no longer producing on-site, remains a major landmark, offering immersive tours that trace the lineage of Irish whiskey.

The area is also home to The Cobblestone, a pub world-renowned for its commitment to traditional Irish music (trad). It is one of the few places in the city where you can hear authentic sessions nightly, maintaining the neighbourhood's raw, unpolished charm amidst modern development.

Smithfield Plaza: A Modern Urban Hub

The Plaza itself is a striking example of urban regeneration. Flanked by twelve towering 26-metre gas lighting masts (reminiscent of old distillery chimneys), it provides a vast open space that hosts everything from seasonal ice rinks to food festivals.

Cultural & Culinary Highlights

The area surrounding the Plaza has become a magnet for the "creative class," offering a blend of independent cinema and artisanal dining:

The Light House Cinema: An arthouse gem known for its vibrant, multicoloured interiors and eclectic programming—ranging from blockbusters to operatic screenings and film festivals.

Speciality Coffee & Dining: Smithfield is arguably Dublin’s coffee capital. Spots like Proper Order and Third Space serve world-class brews, while restaurants like Fish Shop and Nutbutter reflect the area’s modern, health-conscious, and foodie-forward evolution.

Token: A unique "barcade" nearby that combines retro arcade games with high-end diner food, illustrating the youthful, playful energy that now defines the district.

Connectivity and Character

Smithfield’s appeal is bolstered by its superb connectivity. The Luas Red Line runs directly along the south side of the square, making it a five-minute journey to the city centre. Despite the influx of luxury apartments and sleek offices, the area retains a sense of community. It borders Stoneybatter, frequently cited as one of the "coolest" neighbourhoods in the world, creating a continuous stretch of independent boutiques, bakeries, and gastropubs.

Whether you are visiting for the history of whiskey, a quiet morning coffee on the cobbles, or a late-night trad session, Smithfield offers an authentic Dublin experience that manages to be both historical and resolutely contemporary.
