TECHNICAL STUFF

Exploring the narrow streets of Galway in 2026 with the Sony A1 MkII and the FE 100mm f/2.8 Macro GM lens. Discover how using a 2x teleconverter affects street photography, providing unique compression for sculptures and urban textures while navigating the constraints of light loss and focal length in confined spaces.

A 200MM EQUIVALENT LENS

___

**It should be noted that I had intended to use this combination for landscape and waterscape photography but the weather conditions, in general, were totally unsuitable and constrained my activities. The 100 on its own worked well but my preferred option bceame the 28-70 F2 lens. **

When I purchased my Sony FE100 Macro F2.8 GM lens I was offered a X1.4 and an X2 teleconverter at a very attractive price. As the lens is very new I did not get the opportunity to try the teleconverters until my April 2026 visit to Galway but I only brought the X2 as I could not find the X1.4 (I later discovered that it was attached to my Sony A7RV).

In April 2026 in wet/foggy weather, navigating the narrow, curved streets of Galway with a 200mm equivalent setup (the 100mm Macro paired with a 2x teleconverter) on a Sony A1 MkII is a bold exercise in technical management. While Galway's Latin Quarter and its winding alleys are usually the domain of wide-angle or "nifty fifty" lenses, my choice of a long macro setup, hopefully, offered a unique, albeit challenging, perspective.

Worse Case Expectations: Significant light loss (f/5.6 effective aperture), potentially "hunting" autofocus in shaded alleys, and motion blur if the shutter speed isn't high enough to compensate for the 200mm reach and the lack of light in confined spaces. Best Case Expectations: Razor-sharp detail on textures (stone, iron, or fabric) with extreme background compression. The A1 MkII’s AI tracking and high resolution allow for "punching in" to details that others would miss, resulting in cinematic, isolated frames.

Street Photography: Pros & Cons

Using a 100mm Macro with a 2x teleconverter for street work is unconventional, but it offers specific advantages in a dense urban environment like Galway.

Pros

Artistic Compression: The telephoto reach compresses the distance between subjects. In a narrow street, this makes the colourful shopfronts and distant crowds feel layered and dense, creating a "walled-in" aesthetic that feels very authentic to medieval street layouts.

Stealth and Distance: One can capture candid moments or architectural details from the opposite end of an alley, remaining unnoticed by subjects.

Macro Versatility: In a city known for its craftsmanship, the ability to pivot from a street scene to a "life-size" detail of a Claddagh ring or a weathered door knocker (achieving up to 2.8x magnification with the 2x TC) is a massive creative benefit.

Stabilisation: The A1 MkII's advanced IBIS (In-Body Image Stabilisation) works in tandem with the lens's OSS to help mitigate the "shake" inherent in a 200mm handheld shot.

Cons

Aperture Constraints: The 2x teleconverter "steals" two stops of light. Your f/2.8 lens becomes an f/5.6 lens. In Galway’s often overcast weather or within the shadows of tall buildings, you will find yourself pushing the ISO higher than usual.

Physical Manoeuvrability: The added length of the teleconverter makes the rig less discreet and slightly front-heavy, which can be cumbersome in a crowd.

Field of View: In very tight spaces, a 200mm effective focal length can feel "suffocating." You may find yourself literally backed against a wall unable to fit the desired subject in the frame.

The "Sculpture" Factor

The attractive compression on sculptures is the "sweet spot" for this kit. By shooting at 200mm, you eliminate the wide-angle distortion that often makes statues look bulbous or unnatural. Instead, you get a flattened, "heroic" perspective that isolates the artwork from the visual clutter of a busy Irish street, turning a chaotic background into a creamy, abstract wash of colour.
