On the 19th February it stopped raining for a few hours so I visited the North Wall but I did not have a camera with me but I did have a well used iPhone XR so I tried my best to capture what I saw.
Once the industrial backbone of the city, North Wall Quay has evolved into a sleek, contemporary corridor within the Dublin Docklands. Stretching from the historic Custom House toward the bustling Dublin Port, this quay perfectly captures the "New Dublin"—a blend of glass-and-steel architecture, financial powerhouses, and high-end residential living.
The Evolution of the Quay
Historically, North Wall Quay was a gritty maritime hub defined by steamships, cattle exports, and heavy industry. The reclamation of this land began in the early 18th century, but the most dramatic change occurred following the 1990s regeneration.
Today, it is the northern anchor of the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC). The area has transitioned from a landscape of warehouses and cranes to a "Silicon Docks" environment where global tech firms and major banks reside.
Architectural & Cultural Landmarks
North Wall Quay is home to some of the most recognisable structures in modern Ireland:
The Convention Centre Dublin: Designed by Kevin Roche, its iconic tilted glass cylinder is a standout feature of the city’s skyline at night.
The Samuel Beckett Bridge: A cable-stayed swing bridge designed by Santiago Calatrava. Its harp-like shape serves as a functional piece of art, connecting the North and South Quays.
The Central Bank of Ireland: A striking example of modern civic architecture, built upon the skeleton of what was originally intended to be the Anglo Irish Bank headquarters.
3Arena: Situated at the eastern end of the quay, this world-class indoor amphitheatre brings international music and entertainment to the docklands.
