TU Campus My First Time To Use The Sony 50-150mm Lens - Presented By The Urban Cartographer
I travel to Kilkenny tomorrow and I needed to decide if I should bring the Sony FE 50-150 GM lens with me so I spend a few hours photographing in and around Grangegorman. The lens is excellent but I might prove to be a bit on the heavy side compared to other options.

The Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) Grangegorman campus is the university’s flagship urban site, representing one of the largest investments in higher education in the history of the Irish state. Located in Dublin 7, just a short walk from the city centre, the campus is a unique blend of sensitive historical restoration and 21st-century architectural innovation.
Campus Overview
The campus occupies a 73-acre site that was formerly the Richmond District Lunatic Asylum and St. Brendan's Hospital. Today, it serves as a vibrant, open-access "urban quarter" where students, staff, and the local community interact. Key academic hubs include:
The East Quad: Home to the Conservatoire of Music and Drama, as well as the School of Media and Art & Design.
The Central Quad: A massive, state-of-the-art facility housing the sciences, health, and engineering disciplines.
The Academic Hub & Library: Opened in late 2025/early 2026, this building integrates the historic North House with a modern 12,500-square-metre library and student support centre.
Lower House: A beautifully restored 19th-century building that now functions as a primary student hub, featuring dining, common rooms, and fitness studios.
Facilities and Sustainability
The campus is designed with a "landscape-first" approach, featuring extensive green spaces, natural turf GAA and soccer pitches, and a FIFA-approved synthetic pitch. Sustainability is central to its design, with energy-efficient buildings and a focus on pedestrian and cycle-friendly routes. It also hosts the Greenway Hub, a centre for research and innovation that supports start-ups through TU Dublin Hothouse.
