TECHNICAL STUFF

Discover the silent dialogue of "Figure Talking to a Quadruped," a captivating 1994 sculpture by renowned Irish artist Michael Quane RHA. Located in the historic President's Garden at University College Cork (UCC), this masterpiece is a highlight of the university’s public art collection. Carved from ancient Kilkenny limestone using the traditional "direct carving" method, the work explores the primal, non-heroic connection between humans and nature. Its raw texture and intentional ambiguity invite visitors to reflect on the tension and communication that exists beyond words. Whether you are an art enthusiast or a visitor to the Cork campus, this iconic piece offers a profound encounter with modern Irish stone carving and the mythic themes of Michael Quane's celebrated career.

UCC CAMPUS

___

The sculpture I captured, when I visited the Cork University campus, is titled "Figure Talking to a Quadruped", created in 1994 by the renowned Cork-based sculptor Michael Quane.

___

This was more difficult to photograph than I had expected.

Located in the President's Garden on the University College Cork (UCC) campus, it is one of the most recognisable pieces in the university's public art collection. While it appears to be a man and a dog, the artist intentionally uses the term "quadruped" to keep the animal’s identity ambiguous and mythical.

About the Artist: Michael Quane

Michael Quane (born 1962) is a distinguished Irish sculptor and a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA). He is celebrated for his "direct carving" technique, where he carves directly into stone without a preliminary model, allowing the material to guide the final form.

Material: He almost exclusively works with Kilkenny limestone, a dark, dense stone formed over 300 million years ago. If you look closely at the surface, you can often see the marks of the claw-chisel, which he leaves unpolished to give the figures a raw, textured energy.

Style: His work often features heavy-set, powerful human and animal figures that feel both ancient and modern. He frequently explores the relationship between humans and animals, often blurring the lines between the two.

Discussion of the Art

"Figure Talking to a Quadruped" is a study in tension and communication. Unlike traditional public statues that celebrate historical heroes or victories, this piece focuses on a quiet, everyday—yet slightly surreal—interaction.

The Power of Space: Critics often point out that the empty space between the man’s face and the creature’s face is as important as the stone itself. It creates a "silent conversation" that feels charged with energy.

The Unclothed Figure: Quane often carves his human figures without clothes. This isn't just for classical aesthetic reasons; it’s meant to strip away social status and time, making the figure an "everyman" who exists in a universal, primal state.

Anti-Heroic Theme: There is a sense of pathos and equality here. The man isn't "mastering" the animal; he is crouched at its level, engaged in a dialogue of equals.
