MARINA PARK

___

The Elevated Tree Walkway is a centrepiece of the Marina Park Phase 2 development in Cork, designed to offer a unique "canopy-level" perspective of the city's newly restored marshlands and the historic Atlantic Pond area.

Planning and Completion

The walkway was part of the Marina Park Phase 2 master plan, which aimed to transform 13 hectares of the south docklands into an "eco-park."

Planned: The project moved into its active "Part 8" planning and consultation phase around 2021–2022.

Construction: Ground was officially broken on Phase 2 on 23rd January 2023.

Completed: The walkway and the surrounding parkland were officially unveiled in late 2025, with the entire park fully reopening to the public in December 2025, just in time for the Christmas period.

Design and Construction

The project was a collaborative effort involving both public bodies and private engineering firms:

  • Design & Management: O'Connor Sutton Cronin & Associates Ltd (OCSC) was engaged by Cork City Council to lead the multi-disciplinary team, managing the project from preliminary design through to construction and handover.

  • Contractors: The construction of the Phase 2 works, including the complex elevated structures, was carried out by Ward and Burke Construction.

  • Vision: The design focuses on "Respect for Nature," utilising materials like timber decking and steel to blend the industrial heritage of the docklands with the natural marshland environment.

Historical Context: What was there before?

Before its transformation into a public park, this area was a mix of reclaimed industrial land and historic estates.

  • The Showgrounds: The site sits on the former Munster Agricultural Society Showgrounds. For over a century (1892–2009), this was the home of the Cork Summer Show.

  • Industrial Use: Parts of the wider site were historically used for heavy industry, including the nearby Ford and Dunlop factories.

  • Neglected Marshland: The specific location of the walkway was previously a neglected, brackish marshland that was largely inaccessible to the public. It contained several "hidden" heritage sites, such as Barrington’s Folly (a 19th-century gothic tower), the Dundanion Castle slipway, and an old ice cave/boathouse.

Public Reaction

  • The reaction to the elevated walkway and the broader Phase 2 project has been largely positive, though not without typical local debate:

  • Praise for Connectivity: Residents have praised the "world-class" feel of the amenity, noting how it successfully links Blackrock Village to the city centre via a high-quality green lung. The "canopy view" of the Atlantic Pond is frequently cited as a highlight for birdwatchers and photographers.

  • Criticism of Design: During the early rollout of Phase 1 and 2, some users expressed frustration over a perceived "lack of amenities" like permanent toilets or sufficient benches. There were also early social media debates regarding the "minimalist" or "raw" industrial aesthetic of the concrete and metal finishes.

  • Environmental Approval: Conservationists have welcomed the "eco-park" approach, which replaced broken concrete edges with soft, biodiverse planting and preserved the rare marshland flora like Wild Celery and Sea Club-rush.
